Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105
This week, our church hosted a morning VBS for our oldest preschoolers. It is always a great joy and great reminder for me in the midst of each year to be among our youngest disciples for the week. I imagine many parents send their kids because they hope they’ll learn lessons about the Bible and Jesus. But I love going because children remind us of those lessons as adults. This week, the children came up from the preschool, but one was missing. He arrived just a few minutes late and came peeking into the classroom.
The children sit around the edge of the carpet. And as soon as the ones near the door spotted their new friend, they scooched aside and patted the floor in the open space. “There’s room right here!” And with no direction at all from the teachers and pastors in the room, they invited their pal and he smiled ear to ear. I tried imagining adults on a Sunday morning doing this for a newcomer. I do believe it would illicit the same smile and the same joy of belonging.
This week, we taught the children about God’s light in the world. On my day to teach, I told them God’s light is a lamp to our feet and a light to the path we are called to take. The light God shines is so clear and obvious to our children. They see and do what needs to be done to welcome and love those who need it most. Just imagine what we can do when we watch them and follow their lead on the path God illuminates. This Sunday, look for who walks in the door, make a little room, pat the seat next to you, and muster the enthusiasm of a preschooler to say… there’s room right here.
Prayer
Lord, shine your light to my path, and help me to make room in the pew, the church, the world, and my heart. Amen.
